Dramatic Demographic Shift: Austria has undergone a significant demographic transformation from 1960 to 2024. The young population (0-14 years) decreased from 21.8% to 14.4%, while the elderly population (65+ years) increased from 12.1% to 19.8%.
Aging Population: The most striking trend is the rapid aging of Austria’s population. The percentage of people aged 80+ has increased from just 1.7% in 1960 to 5.9% in 2024, representing a more than three-fold increase.
Working Age Population: The working-age population (20-64 years) remained relatively stable, ranging between 60.9% and 76.2% across the period, with the most recent data showing 60.9% in 2024.
Demographic Transition Timeline: The steepest decline in young population occurred between 1960-1990, while the elderly population growth accelerated after 2000, indicating Austria’s transition to an aged society structure.
