What has been done

A beginner-friendly seasonal workshop was organised at the Lehngericht Digitalwerkstatt in Augustusburg, inviting the general public to create their own illuminated, digital Ore Mountain candle arch. Participants were introduced to the cultural background of this traditional object and then developed individual motives using simple digital design tools such as Canva or Inkscape. The designs were prepared for production and cut from wood with a laser cutter under supervision. In a second practical step, participants learned the basics of soldering and LED installation and assembled a functional illuminated object. The workshop was offered in several time slots on a Saturday and Friday night, making participation flexible for families, young adults, and other interested visitors.

Why was it needed locally

The pilot addressed a tradition to tech gap by creating a low-threshold, hands-on format that reconnects cultural identity with modern making and strengthens creative confidence and technical curiosity across the local community. It activated pioneer skills by inviting participants to try unfamiliar tools, turn an idea into a finished object, and take small technical risks in a supported setting.

Target Groups: How were they activated and their benefits

Regional society – For this pilot, the target group was the general public with a strong focus on families and mixed-age participants, including children, youth, and accompanying adults. The format especially addressed beginners with little or no prior experience in digital fabrication or electronics, while also attracting young adults in the evening time slots. This cross-generational setting enabled shared learning experiences and encouraged exchange between different age groups and skill levels.

Activation: The general public was activated through an open, beginner-friendly workshop format that was easy to join without prior knowledge; the familiar and emotionally resonant theme of the Schwibbogen, combined with hands-on making and visible results.

Hands-on maker workshop combining regional craft tradition, digital design, laser cutting and basic electronics in a guided, beginner-friendly format. Participants designed and produced their own illuminated, digital candle arch, moving from idea and motif development to fabrication, soldering and final assembly.

Methods used: Learning by making: Participants learned through the complete creation of a tangible object: designing, laser cutting, soldering and assembling their own illuminated candle arch. This practical process lowered barriers to digital fabrication and electronics, especially for first-time users.
Ore Mountains Tradition meets Digital Fabrication: The workshop used the traditional candle arch from the Ore Mountains as a culturally familiar entry point into modern maker technologies. By connecting regional craft heritage with tools such as Canva/Inkscape, laser cutting and LEDs, participants could relate new technical skills to an accessible and meaningful object.
Guided First-Time Tool Experience: Participants received short safety briefings and close facilitation before using the laser cutter and soldering equipment. The supervised setting enabled safe first experiences with unfamiliar tools and supported confidence-building across mixed ages and skill levels.

    Done by makerspace staff; participants could watch and learn about the machine process.
  • Material awareness: An awareness of the material participants were working with had to be part of the design process. This awareness needs either clear guidance or an accepted failure culture an learning by doing.

Basic electronics – LED setup and soldering

  • Basic digital design: Using Canva or Inkscape, participants can intuitively get used to digital design and learn the basic steps and needs for designing a laser cut project. They had to think ahead in the process and imagine the finished product to be able to anticipate during the design process.

Design assembly – combining components into final structure

  • Assembly: Individual parts are assembled into a complete Schwibbogen and testet accordingly
  • Evaluation: After designing and a technical trajectory, participants were asked to evaluate their processes. This was helpful for self reflection and concious skill-building.

Results

Measurable and Direct Outcomes

The local action brought about the following concrete results:

  • Improved entrepreneurial / pioneer skills: The workshop strengthened curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, and confidence in trying unfamiliar tools. 100% reported learning something new and 100% would join similar formats again.
  • Improved maker skills: The format gave participants direct first-time access to maker tools and processes. 70% saw a laser cutter for the first time, 60% soldered for the first time, and over 100 pieces of Ore Mountains candle arches were produced in two sessions.

Indirect Impacts

The workshop strengthened agility, adaptability, and time management through a guided but flexible making process. Its cross-generational setting enabled strong cooperation between age groups, with children sometimes even teaching or supporting their parents, and showed that learning by doing can work as a universal language with strong potential for integration. It also reinforced the local makerspace as an accessible learning space and created a repeatable format for future workshops.
